Fund Raising
Part of the life of church is financial giving and we are making a big effort in both churches to encourage people to review their giving. It takes a lot of money to keep our churches open and both our treasurers work hard to keep us solvent. It is a hard job and in the present climate even harder.
So please review what you are giving and ask us about the different ways you may give.
The best way you can help us be an active and caring community of faith is to set up a standing order and donate regularly to Christ Church. To set this up please pick up a form in the foyer of our church.
If you are a UK tax payer we can claim gift aid on any money you donate.
Thank you
Tower Appeal (£11,033.14 of £30,000 raised at 29/9/23)
The building of Christ Church tower began in 1786 between the years of the American and
French Revolutions. The church in those times stood almost alone in the fields about half a mile
north of the township of North Shields at the junction of two important roads. The congregation
of the parish church was determined to erect an impressive addition to their old church which
had been consecrated in 1668 and to have a ring of bells to summon them to worship.
The first six bells were lost at sea during their journey north from the London foundry. The
second ring of six bells reached the Tyne successfully on the sailing ship 'The Happy Return'
and pealed out for the first time on January 18th 1788 to mark the official birthday of
Queen Charlotte, Consort of George III.
The church with its massive square tower is one of the tallest and oldest buildings in North
Tyneside. Until now it has withstood the ravages of war, weather, and time and has witnessed
many changes in the fortunes of both the nation and North Shields. For nearly 240 years the
bells have rung out in times of both joy and sorrow and have provided a regular reminder that
the worship of God takes place week in and week out in a changing and uncertain world.
235 years of Wind and Rain
It is 25 years since the tower was last repaired and the weather has eroded stone, rusted
metalwork, and stripped wood bare of paint. Hopefully all this wear and tear will be remedied
following the erection of scaffolding and a detailed inspection.
The Cost
It has been estimated that this work will cost around €30,000. This is a large amount of money
to raise and the appeal committee is seeking as many ways as possible of raising money
through grants and large donations. However, as we found out when we raised money for the
building of the new Parish Centre in 1984 it was the small donations and parish fundraising
activities which raised substantial amounts and also gave the greatest fun and satisfaction.
We look forward to your support and ask that donations both large and small should be sent to the
address overleaf.
Thank you.

Nite Bite Food & Friendship
Nite Bite is a ministry of Churches Together in North Shields, providing a hot meal to anyone who is homeless or otherwise in need. Volunteers gather at the Baptist church on Howard Street (NE30 1AR) on Tuesday afternoons to set up the hall, prepare the food, collect food from supermarkets and put out additional food, clothing and household goods for people to collect. At 4pm we start serving drinks, followed by a three course meal and finished off with a game of bingo!
Volunteers are the lifeblood of Nite Bite. Our volunteers are drawn from across many of the churches who are part of Churches Together in North Shields and it is a great way to meet new people from different churches. Working together is really
satisfying: no one church has the resources to run Nite Bite on their own but together we can do so much more to make a
positive impact in our community.
Currently we need more people to help us. You might like to work in the kitchen alongside our fabulous cooks, making drinks,
assisting with food preparation and helping to wash up. Or you might be much more at home setting up tables, welcoming our
guests, helping to serve meals or chatting to people as they pick up clothing and foodstuffs.
You don’t need to be available every Tuesday to help us.
If you would like to know more, call in and chat on Tuesdays between 2.00 p.m. and 4.00 p.m. at the Baptist Church, Howard Street, North Shields.....or give Helen a ring on 07472 304756 and maybe arrange to visit us one week to see what goes on and decide whether this might be for you!
Food Bank
The food bank operates from The Bay Food Bank, Waterville Road, Meadow Well, providing food in an emergency to individuals and families who find themselves in financial crisis.
Nite Bite and the Food Bank are very busy and grateful for our support. Sugar, jam, tinned meat (Irish stew, corned beef etc.) and toilet rolls are particularly welcome. Donations can be left in our churches.
