About
Christ Church
Christ Church was built as
the Parish Church of Tynemouth to replace St.
Mary's which was
inside the walls of Tynemouth Castle. It was consecrated to
the
service of God by the Bishop of Durham, John Cosin on Sunday 5th
July
1668.
The first church, which was a
functional preaching house, probably plainly
built in the form of a
cross, has been greatly altered and extended since its
consecration.
The building we have today, more than 330 years later, has
changed
radically but continues in the service of God.
In the Lady Chapel a
light burns continuously where the Reserved Sacrament
is kept and
you may wish to light a candle yourself, as a prayer for someone in
need. Christ Church is not just an old building but a church, used
daily for
worship and prayer. You are welcome to join us at any of
our services.
